The early black and white work of 1993 was vessel based suggesting the surrounding architecture and buildings in London. This work moved interest away from that of previous containment vessels. Altough "piano box" and "white box" were designed with concealed lidded compartments they were important transitionary pieces towards scuptural forms that cut away from ceramic tradition and function.

The flat shapes use a limited colour palette of black and white engobes , applied with a signature paper resist technique, picked up with a black wash at the biscuit firing stage.
